LIVINGSTON- After serving the community for 15 years, a group of mothers in Livingston Parish is continuing to grow its mission of feeding families in the Capital Area.

The Mighty Moms group is full of superheroes in plain clothes, working to feed children who need a nutritious meal.

They've had the same mission since 2014, when WBRZ's Sylvia Weatherspoon interviewed them for a 2 Make A Difference segment. At that time, they were working from a tiny storage unit, but now they have their own building and tables full of meals.

In 2025, their efforts to fight childhood hunger are being recognized. Earlier this year, Mighty Moms was honored at the "Volunteer Louisiana Champion of Service."

Founder of Mighty Moms, Dawn Birdsong, says they are continuing to grow.

"We are feeding nearly a thousand kids a week right now. In 2014, we were probably feeding a couple of hundred. And the list is long,” Birdsong said. “We have a waiting list."

These moms are bridging the gap for the children and families that need a meal, which has continued to grow after COVID-19. The rise of grocery store prices are also a high contributing factor as well.

"It costs a lot of money to live. You know, we see a lot of families where mom and dad are both working or both grandparents are working, and they just can't quite make enough money to have everything they need and put food on the table,” Birdsong said. “So Mighty Moms is here to help."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one in five school-aged children in Livingston Parish lives below the poverty level. And for most of the kids, it is a hidden secret.

“They look like our kids. She might have a cute bow in her hair, and he might have cute tennis shoes. But that doesn’t mean that they are not struggling to have enough food on the table and nutritious food on the table that is consistent,” Birdsong said.

Brandi Fields volunteers with Hebron Baptist Church and provides cooked meals to Mighty Moms,

"Every meal counts, and every small impact matters to somebody. Wherever you can drop a seed, I think it is important. We are hoping to continue to do this. Hopefully, maybe four or five times a year,” Fields said.

Birdsong likes seeing families share a meal every once in a while.

"It's a meal a week and we want you to get back around the table and cook a meal together and play a game together at the table,” Birdsong said. “One of the dads that has written something that said he feels seen by us, he feels heard by us, not judged.”

Might Moms is still giving people hope in the community, 15 years after their beginning. For more information about Mighty Moms, click here
